Basic Instruction for Video Publisher

Last week, we announced that we're turning down uploads to Google Video, and refocusing our attention on building a more comprehensive video search engine (in case you're wondering, Google Video search algorithms power YouTube as well as "universal search" from Google.com). We want to make it possible for people searching Google.com or Google Video to find any video, at any time, from any site. But indexing video presents some unique challenges, and if you have videos on your site, you're probably wondering how to make sure your videos are discoverable through Google.

We want video publishers to know that we've made it easier to submit your videos to Google. First, we've simplified the process that allows you to submit Sitemaps to Google. Second, we also extended our Video Sitemaps support to include Media RSS feeds. You do not have to specify the Sitemap file type—we'll determine the type of data you're submitting automatically.

The more information you make available, the easier it is for us to crawl your videos. Here are a few simple things you can include in your Sitemaps to make your videos easier to find:
1) Landing page URL: This is the page where the video is hosted. It's better to have a unique landing page for each video on your site.
2) Video thumbnail URL: Thumbnails provide a strong visual cue to the user. Your video thumbnail should be representative of a snapshot from the video, and should not be misleading in any way.
3) Title & Description: If these are accurate and descriptive, they not only help Google understand your video, but also help users choose the best video search result. Providing information about category, keyword tags and duration is always helpful.

Whether or not you have Video Sitemaps or MRSS feeds, of course, it's important that you make sure that Google can crawl and index your video sites correctly. Make sure you understand how Google crawls, indexes and serves the web. Review the Webmaster Guidelines that will help Google find, index and rank your site. We've also updated the Google Video Help Center to include more information for video publishers. While there's no guarantee that our spiders will find a particular site, following these guidelines should increase the chances of finding videos from your site in the search results.

We hope your videos find the audience they deserve. Take a look at our help content for Video Publishers and Webmasters to get started.

Google Video going to stop uploading facility on google.

A two days ago, Google finally announced that they are shutting down the ability for users to upload videos to Google Video “in a few months”. I say finally because many of us expected this to happen for some time and given the efforts spent on enhancements to YouTube, it only makes sense that Google keeps Youtube as the source for uploading video.

“In a few months, we will discontinue support for uploads to Google Video. Don’t worry, we’re not removing any content hosted on Google Video — this just means you will no longer be able to upload new content to the service. We’ve always maintained that Google Video’s strength is in the search technology that makes it possible for people to search videos from across the web, regardless of where they may be hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.
We’re confident this decision is the right one for our users, and we’re looking forward to making Google Video an even better place for you to search and find videos from all over the web.” - Michael Cohen, Product Manager - Google Video

So, What does this mean for video seo?
Simple, Get your video sitemaps ready! If you don’t already know, aside from uploading, there are a few additional ways to get your videos into the Google Video search index.
First off, you can create and submit a video XML sitemap to Google via the Google Webmaster Center. This method is Google’s preferred method in terms of sitemap submissions. However, in addition to XML video sitemaps, you can also submit an MRSS feed via Google’s Webmaster Center. Finally, Google crawls the web and looks for video content on its own. If you are serving flash movie files (FLV, F4V, etc…) through a video hosting provider, it is more difficult for Google to discover these videos. Therefore, we recommend creating and submitting a XML video sitemap.

Overall, it is still important to get your video up on Google Video as it appears that this is one way in which you can get video thumbnails to appear within Google organic search. Furthermore, if it is your strategy to get your videos seen by the masses, it is important that you get your video as much exposure as possible. Google video is an important destination for those searching for videos. According to the latest Comscore metrics, Google properties (which include YouTube) have the largest share by far (40% share compared to the next highest - Fox, with 4% share) when it comes to both video views and unique viewers.

Keyword Research Tool For Video SEO

Posted by Chirag Vyas | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 | 0 comments »

Over the course of the past year, I have had at least 10 people ask me whether I was aware of any online keyword research tools that specifically focused on keyword suggestions for online video marketing. Trust me, I’ve asked everyone I know… I have even put in requests to some of the popular online keyword research companies with no indication that such a tool was being developed. About a month ago, Youtube released its “YouTube Suggest” enhanced search functionality which doubles as an excellent video marketing keyword suggestion tool for doing keyword research on Youtube. Essentially, this feature uses predictive text to display popular query suggestions (in order of search volume) in the Youtube search box. The functionality is turned on by default but you can enable it and disable it via the Youtube advanced search settings link:
Here is a screenshot of the suggestion functionality in action:

By using Youtube Suggest, you can gain insight into how users are searching on Youtube and which queries are most often performed. These keyword suggestions can then be used to add to your video in order to increase the chances of targeting the largest possible relevant audience.

You will notice that this feature is very much the same thing that you see when using Google Suggest, which has been available on Google Labs for some time. In fact, Youtube is using the Google Suggest functionality to power the Youtube Suggestions. Because this is the case, you can also get these same suggestions by using the following JSON call, where q=the term being searched:
http://suggestqueries.google.com/complete/search? hl=en&
ds=yt&json=t&jsonp=callbackfunction&q=orange+county+ca

This past week, I read an excellent post on this by Bryson Meunier, where he goes into depth about how to properly do keyword research, in particular, for Youtube. Bryson does a great job of explaining how current keyword research tools are insufficient if you are looking to discover keyword suggestions specific to Youtube and online video.

“The problem with doing keyword research for videos this way is that the most popular queries in WordTracker, which takes its data from meta search engines, are not necessarily the most popular queries in YouTube. In fact, in most cases they’re probably entirely dissimilar.”

Bryson also goes into some very interesting research that he did using the youtube suggestions in order to determine the top query categories in youtube.

“By far the most popular category on YouTube was Arts & Entertainment, of which music searches made up the bulk. No real surprises here. Nonetheless, there are popular categories outside this category that brands looking to get into video SEO should consider. This is also a study of head queries, so the long tail of video SEO could vary…”

Video Search Engine Optimisation (VSEO) - tips and strategies

Posted by Chirag Vyas | Thursday, January 08, 2009 | 1 comments »

The use of video’s to promote your online content is becoming more and more important, and prevalent, in the expanding world of search engine optimisation. We should be seeing a big boost in VSEO (Video Search Engine Optimisation) in 2009. With the growth of video portals such as You Tube (www.youtube.com) and multi-submission sites such as Tube Mogul (www.tubemogul.com), it has never been easier to get your videos on the web. So why should you try and go down the root of selling VSEO to your customers? What is its selling power? Is there more to it that popping your video up on You Tube and hoping for the best? Or do you need to provide your customer with a full blown media centre?

Why use Video SEO?

1. Video on independent websites seem to be quickly and heavily indexed and ranked by the major search engines.
2. Including videos adds additional ways to optimise for your keywords and phrases. By adding content relevant to your keywords and phrases, combined with the related videos, will add weight to your site and its content.
3. The video content can be duplicated on 3rd party website such as you tube without any duplicate content penalties.
4. Allows for more text and pages to optimise your keywords and phrases around. Be sure to surround videos with relevant on-page content.
5. Embedding videos in your site pages is a great way to increase the stickiness factor of your pages, which can increase both traffic and search rankings for a specific page. Google and most search engines use a variety of factors to determine the ranking importance a specific page online, one of which is average visitor session length on a page. Visitor length on a page can be increased by embedding a video. These longer site visits may be interpreted by Google that the page has increased value and in turn may be given a bump that translates into higher search engine rankings.
6. Choosing a video that is themed to your content and informative can help with the stickiness factor – you need to give the search engines something to crawl. Adding an irrelevant video for the sake of adding a video will just confuse your visitors.
7. Videos help in adding new, fresh and dynamic content to the site.
8. It is important get your video content found by the search engines. This can be achieved through the use of sitemaps, RSS and MRSS (Media RSS) feeds. Google has introduced Video Sitemaps that will index the video content. If video files are named correctly this is valuable to the search engines. Click here to see Google tips on creating and adding a video sitemap: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/topic.py?topic=10079
9. Videos are now listed in the search engine results pages adding valuable links and alternative sources to your brand name and web site.

Tips for implementing Video SEO

1. File Names - Give the video file a catchy and relevant name that is related to your keyword or phrase. Once you have uploaded your video sitemap there is added opportunity for these keywords and phrases to be found and indexed by the search engines.
2. Meta Data - Add meta data to your video files. Again, use relevant meta data, like you would when you are carrying out other Search engine optimisation campaigns.
3. Transcripts - Transcripts of the video will add credible content to the page and give the spiders relevant information to crawl. The transcript should make reference to keywords, relevant content and your brand.
4. Outbound Linking - If you add video content to other sites such as You Tube, make sure that you avail of their ability to link back to your own site.
5. Video Length - Add shorter videos to keep your audience interested. If your video is quite lengthy, consider breaking it down into smaller chunks. This will also give more quality video content to optimise.
6. Branding – Have your branding displayed in your video to enhance your brand awareness.
7. Inbound Linking – link your videos to important keywords throughout your site to enhance their value.
8. Rating – allow users / visitors to rate your video

What can you provide to your customer to boost your sales and in turn boost their rankings?

The first step is getting your client to see the value in undertaking Video Search Engine Optimisation. Using the information supplied in this document you should be able to present a fairly strong case to your client. You will also need to provide them with a viable strategy that will get their rankings up. For a simple solution, you can offer to add content to video sites, implementing the tips outlined above.
Another option is to provide them with a video library on their site that will have separate pages for the individual videos. This will allow you to add valuable content and meta data, plus the ability to link to these pages from within your site.
